When Should You Renovate: Before or After Moving In?

A renovation is one of the best ways to personalize your new home. However, deciding when to start the remodel is an important decision because it can affect your finances, living conditions and project completion.

To ensure the right timing for your remodeling project, J. Bryant Boyd Architect Design-Build lists some key factors to consider.

After Move-In

  • Time

If you start renovating your new home after moving in, you will have enough time to learn more about the property and plan your project thoroughly. This allows you to determine exactly how you want to use and modify each space.

  • Finances

Another advantage is that you won’t need to maintain and pay for two homes. This will lessen your financial burden and overall stress while the remodel is ongoing. You won’t have to set up housekeeping and spend money on storage for two properties.

  • Comfort

If you plan to have a whole-house remodel, comfort will be surely compromised. Living in a construction zone is inconvenient, and it could place undue stress on your daily life. For example, if you work at home, loud noises can be disruptive to your routine. You will also have to contend with construction vehicles and roll-off bins in your driveway and you may be forced to park on the street.

  • Safety

In a construction zone, there will be a lot of hazardous areas that can put your family at risk. To avoid any accidents, some parts of the house will be off-limits to you. Your contractor will also need to set up barriers to contain dust and prevent anyone from accessing the work areas.

Before Move-In

  • Cost

Renovating before move-in can lower the overall cost of the project. Barriers and other additional construction for safety concerns won’t be needed, reducing your remodeling expenses. However, you will be forced to maintain two homes until the work is complete. Some homeowners opt to rent an affordable space nearby. But depending on the project timeline, these costs can quickly add up.

  • Quality of Life

Even if you have your new home remodeled before moving in, you will still be living in a temporarily inconvenient situation. You might need to rent a smaller space and try to fit your whole family and all your belongings there until the work is done.

  • Kids and Pets

When deciding the best time for renovations, always consider the impact the job is going to have on the well-being of your children and pets. The inconveniences and disruption caused by living in a work zone can make children and pets anxious and uncomfortable. They may also experience sleep difficulties.
