Creating a Formal Dining Area Without a Separate Dining Room

These days, more people prefer to set up a dining area instead of a formal dining room, especially since open floor plans are all the rage. While you may not have a separate room just for eating, you can still create a sense of a separation with a simple visual trick or two. Check out these tips from your favorite provider of high-end home remodeling services, J Bryant Boyd Architect Design-Build.

Use a Bench or Banquette As a Divider

If you have a square or rectangular dining table, use a bench or banquette on one side of it. This will set your dining area apart from the rest of the space and allow more dinner guests to sit at table. You can also place the banquette against a wall to create a nook (and save space).

Make Small Spaces Stand Out with Artwork

This is a trick popular among interior designers, architects and design-build firms. Well-placed art can create the sense of a “room.” Something big and bold on a wall will act as a focal point and define the dining area, especially if you have your table near or against the wall. You can also set up a gallery wall along one length or corner of your dining area.

Separate the Area with Paint or Wallpaper

Here’s a simple idea to separate your dining area from the rest of the room: paint the wall or corner of the area a separate bold color. Alternatively, you can use patterned wallpaper. The visual contrast will give the area the feel of a separate space with its own mood and theme.
