4 Myths About Custom Homes, Debunked

There are a lot of myths out there about custom homes, some of which can put off potential home buyers from enjoying their features. Local design-build firm J. Bryant Boyd Architect Design-Build examines and debunks some of these myths.

Common Myths About Custom Homes

1. “The cost of a custom home is too high.” Custom homes do cost more than pre-fabricated ones, but they don’t necessarily fall in the same budget categories as villas and sprawling mansions. The key concept here is “custom,” which means you can choose the materials that will be used, how big your home will be, as well as all the features that will be included. All of these can be made to fit both your budget and lifestyle, with the added value of a truly unique home.

2. “The build process is too long.” Custom homes take about the same amount of time to build as any other type of home. It’s important to find a custom builder who has the experience with custom projects because it requires more planning and plenty of custom work.

3. “It will be too hard to communicate my ideas to the designer.” Not everyone can articulate what they want with their custom home. It’s perfectly normal for some to think that they won’t be able to communicate their ideas to the designer, which is why most design-build firms have a process in place for facilitating that. The process involves meeting with the designer to discuss your overall vision for your home. Then, you’ll work together to come up with a floor plan and exterior, down to the smallest details. With a little communication and collaboration, you’ll be able to get the exact home you want.

4. “There’s no way to build an energy-efficient custom home.” Some people seem to think that custom homes can’t be energy-efficient, when in fact the opposite is true: there are plenty of ways to build an energy-efficient custom home. You can choose from a variety of energy-saving features, from exterior wall insulation to insulated windows, as well as solar panels and tankless water heaters.
