5 Design Tips for an Amazing Kitchen

October 17, 2018 by J. Bryant Boyd

Most expert designers agree that “design is all about the details.” This certainly rings true in the kitchen. The small details are crucial because a kitchen should be a highly functional area. Read on as J Bryant Boyd shares five tips for creating a beautiful kitchen that is as functional as it is beautiful.

5 Design Tips for an Amazing Kitchen

  1. Use Lighting– Unlike in other rooms of the house, overhead lighting is insufficient in kitchens. In the kitchen, you don’t want the light casting your shadow on your workspace. You need it to fall on countertops in front of where you work. Seek the help of custom home building services for under cabinet lighting.

  1. Ramp Up On Storage Space– Don’t make the mistake of not allowing for enough storage—especially in the kitchen. As much as possible, use every nook and cranny. Consider deep drawers for easier access to pots and pans. Provide enough storage for small appliances that would clutter up countertops.

  1. Consider Your Flooring Options– For your flooring, consider slip resistance, ease of maintenance and porosity. Stone floors are somewhat porous and may need periodic resealing. Chances are, you don’t want to deal with that process. Hardwood floors are beautiful, but they wear out faster by the fridge, stove and sink. Hard, natural stone works very well, and its earthy look and feel is very popular.

  1. Plan Electric Power, Gas and Drainage– Provide enough power sources for all appliances. Finding out later that you don’t have the right gas or electric lines can be troublesome. Make sure that your appliances fit right into allocated spaces. A dishwasher that’s too crammed in could push up against the hose and not drain properly.

  1. Utilize the Kitchen Triangle– When redesigning a kitchen, think about its functionality first. While you might want it to look as appealing as possible, functionality should always be your priority. Set the sink, fridge and cooktop to form a triangle, with no more than 6 feet between each for ease of movement.
