3 Things To Consider Before Adding a Bathroom to Your Basement

July 5, 2021 by J. Bryant Boyd

If you are thinking about building a bathroom in your basement, you are not the only one. According to design-build firms, if you’ve already converted your basement into a spare bedroom, man cave or office, then adding a bathroom can further boost your home’s overall value. Once you are ready to pull the trigger on a basement bathroom, here are a few things you should consider before hiring a contractor.

Adding a Bathroom to Your Basement

1. Plumbing

Installing a bathroom in a basement can be challenging, not to mention expensive, since you are probably going to make a plan for new plumbing. While the cost of installing new plumbing lines can vary greatly, it is not uncommon for it to cost thousands of dollars. For this reason, it is important that you speak to an experienced plumber before taking on the project to avoid getting sticker shock right in the middle of your project.

2. Permits

Before laying down the first tile, make sure that you square everything away with your local building authority. When it comes to any kind of basement work, you are likely to run into zoning ordinances. If you hire a local home remodeling services provider, this is likely something they can help you with.

3. Half-Bath or Full Bath

Once you get your plumbing and permits settles, the next thing you need to think about is what kind of bathroom you want. Depending on your budget and needs, you can opt to go with a full bath complete with a tub and stand-up shower, or you can choose to go simple with only a sink and toilet. Since you are already new plumbing, now is also a good time to think about whether you want to add a laundry area or a utility sink.
